Tribert Rujugiro Ayabatwa Launches Foundation for African Youth

– New Nonprofit Organization to Provide Scholarships, Internships

JOHANNESBURG, Dec. 4, 2013 / PRNewswire — Pan-African industrialist and entrepreneur Tribert Rujugiro Ayabatwa today announced the establishment of a new nonprofit foundation, the Tribert Rujugiro Ayabatwa (TRA) Foundation, to benefit African youth through scholarships and internships.

Ayabatwa, 72, said TRA Foundation will provide scholarships for African students interested in pursuing careers in science, engineering and technology. The Foundation will also finance and organize internships for graduates in these areas of study to ensure they receive the practical, hands-on experience they need to succeed in today’s job market.

“It has been my lifelong goal to provide opportunities for African youth,” Ayabatwa said. “Having been denied a formal education after the eighth grade, I had to work that much harder to prove myself. I do not want any child to experience that. I hope this foundation will make it easier for today’s students to get the education, training and experience they need to succeed.”

The TRA Foundation will have a wide focus but pay special attention to the countries in which Ayabatwa has business interests. Ayabatwa, who recently retired from full-time work, has diverse business holdings in tobacco, cement, snack foods, tea and real estate, among other industries.

While the Foundation is a new endeavor, Ayabatwa has been involved in philanthropy for decades. One of the native Rwandan’s passions has been to aid Rwandan youth by providing scholarships for high school and college students. Between 2005 and 2012, Ayabatwa financed more than 100 scholarships.

“I grew up a refugee in an urban ghetto in Burundi during the 1960s,” Ayabatwa said. “It was tough. But others helped me along the way; they helped me get on the path to success. I hope that through TRA Foundation we can do the same for young Africans who, like me, just need a helping hand.”
