Newspapers Review: Renewed protests over Jerusalem focus of dailies

RAMALLAH, Renewed peaceful demonstrations that evolved into clashes over the US decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital hit the front page headlines in Palestinian Arabic dailies on Thursday.

Al-Ayyam reported that scores of Palestinians sustained injuries and suffocation when Israeli forces suppressed anti-Trump demonstrations that continued to rock the occupied Palestinian territories.

Al-Quds reported that Israeli forces cracked down on peaceful anti-Trump demonstrations in Huwwara and Bethlehem.

It added Israeli forces delivered demolition orders for three Palestinian homes in East Jerusalem neighborhood of Ras Khamis.

It also reported that Israeli forces opened fire on an anti-Trump protest to the east of Gaza, injuring a Palestinian man.

According to al-Quds and al-Ayyam, Israeli Jewish settlers torched a Palestinian-owned vehicle in East Jerusalem neighborhood of Beit Safafa.

Furthermore, al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida said Israeli forces detained a number of Palestinians, including four minors, and seized funds during multiple overnight raids across the West Bank.

Al-Ayyam added that Israeli police detained a Palestinian teenage girl purportedly for planning to stab troops at Qalandia checkpoint, north of Jerusalem.

It also reported that Israeli forces sealed the entrance to Fawwar refugee camp, southwest of Hebron.

Moreover, the dailies highlighted the Israeli Transportation Minister Israel Katz’s decision to name a new train station to be built next to the al-Buraq Wall, also known as the Western Wall, after US President Donald Trump.

Al-Ayyam reported that the Israeli government has agreed to transfer 40 million Israeli shekels ($11.5 million) to illegal West Bank settlements.

Highlighting the Palestinian cabinet’s weekly session, al-Quds said the cabinet ratified a number of agreements with Jordan and a draft law on higher education.

The dailies said that the foreign ministers of six Arab countries are set to meet in Jordan during January on Jerusalem.

According to al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida, Israeli military prosecution has demanded that a Palestinian who stabbed and killed three Israeli settlers five months ago to be sentenced to serve four life terms in prison.

Omar al-Abed, 19, a resident of the Ramallah-district village of Kobar, was found guilty by an Israeli military court of killing the settlers in July in the illegal Halamish settlement, northwest of Ramallah.

They added that an Israeli military court has released on bail 16-year-old Fawzi Juneidi after 20 days in detention.

Al-Junaidi was arrested during an anti-Trump demonstration in Hebron city on December 7. His photo showing him blindfolded, handcuffed and surrounded by at least 20 fully-armed Israeli soldiers went viral on social media.

The papers also said that the Israeli military authorities renewed the administrative detention of Palestinian lawmaker Khalida Jarrar by six months. Jarrar was detained at her Ramallah home in June and served six months in administrative detention without charge or trial. She previously served 15 months in prison for membership in the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine and for her anti-occupation activities.

Al-Ayyam reported Health Minister Jawad Awad announcing that the crisis of cleaners in Gaza hospitals was resolved and their strike was ended.
