After visiting Hawara, US Special Representative condemns the widescale indiscriminate settler violence

After visiting today the town of Hawara, in the north of the West Bank which was the scene of rampage and arson by Israeli settlers on Sunday night, US Special Representative Hady Amr expressed his deepest condolences to the family of a Palestinian killed in the attacks and condemned what he described as “the unacceptable widescale, indiscriminate violence by settlers.”

“We want to see full accountability and legal prosecution of those responsible for these heinous attacks and compensation for those who lost property or were otherwise affected,” said Amr after inspecting the damage done in the Palestinian town.

US State Department spokesman Ned Price said yesterday that the United States “is extremely concerned by the continuing violence in Israel and the West Bank. It is imperative Israel and the Palestinians work together to de-escalate tensions and restore calm. Israelis and Palestinians deserve equally to live in safety and security.”

He said that these developments “underscore the imperative to immediately de-escalate tensions in words and deeds,” stressing that the United States “will continue to work with Israelis and Palestinians and our regional partners towards restoring calm.”

Speaking at the same tour in Hawara with the US Representative, Fatah Deputy Chairman Mahmoud Aloul stressed the importance of providing protection for the Palestinians and curbing the settlers, settlement activities and Israeli aggression.

“The main loss is the terror experienced by the people, especially women and children, as a result of the attacks carried out by the settlers, and the setting fire to their homes and properties, and this is an unprecedented psychological loss,” said Aloul. “We are counting on the role of the US administration in stopping violence in the region.”

Hawara mayor Mueen Dmeidi said that what his town has experienced in the past two days was unprecedented and was done under the eye and protection of the Israeli army.
