Bahrain on right track towards achieving net zero

Electricity and Water Affairs Minister, Yasser bin Ibrahim Humaidan, has affirmed that under the leadership of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, the kingdom is interested in reducing carbon emissions by taking the necessary measures and initiatives within the framework of its commitment to achieving zero carbon neutrality by the year 2060.

This interest is reflected in the projects being implemented by the government, led by His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister, in addition to the kingdom’s keenness to activate the international agreements related to achieving sustainable development, as well as its commitment to its role in the international community, and interest in issues related to addressing climate change.

The minister made the statements while participating in the second edition of the World Utilities Congress, which is being held in Abu Dhabi, under the patronage of His Highness Shaikh Khaled bin Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Abu Dhabi Crown Prince and Abu Dhabi Executive Council Chairman, from May 8 to 10.

The minister commended the distinguished efforts exerted by the UAE in hosting and organising the international event, praising the role played by the UAE Minister of Energy and Infrastructure, Suhail bin Mohammed Al Mazrouei, to ensure its success.

Yasser bin Ibrahim Humaidan also participated in the session entitled “Strengthening ambition en route to COP28 and beyond”, alongside a number of energy ministers from the UAE, Egypt and Romania to discuss regional and national commitments to reduce emissions before the COP 28 climate conference.

He highlighted the importance of stepping up cooperation among different countries in order to achieve common goals represented in protecting the planet, and achieving sustainability in line with international conventions, taking into account the advancement of developing countries.

He indicated that Bahrain places the future of energy, resource development and sustainability among its national priorities, adding that work is underway to develop infrastructure and prepare programmes and strategies at the national level, to achieve the desired goals of the Kingdom of Bahrain’s National Renewable Energy Action Plan (NREAP) and National Energy Efficiency Action Plan (NEEAP).
