British cosmologist Hawkings’ stand indictment of racist policies, says paper.

WAM ABU DHABI: Israel must reverse its racist policies against the Palestinians and work through the main issues which are hindering the peace process, a UAE paper remarked Saturday in an editorial comment on renowned scientist Stephen Hawking’s decision to boycott an Israeli conference.

“Hawking’s courageous act is an indictment of racist policies … (and) ..it will have given Palestinians a lot of hope in believing that they are not alone in fighting Israeli occupation and intransigence,” the Dubai-based Gulf News said noting that there has been growing concern from the international community that the current Israeli leadership is seriously harming the already stalled peace process through its ongoing policies of occupation and land grabs.

The paper slammed as “appalling” the level of abuse from many Israelis, that has been directed at the world-renowned scientist for choosing to boycott an Israeli conference hosted by Israeli President Shimon Perez – thereby throwing his weight behind the academic boycott of Israel.

“That some decided to resort to personal abuse over his physical condition is disgusting. Just like any individual, the celebrated physicist has every right to voice his opinion without being showered with insults,” the Dubai-based paper said.

In a letter to the organisers of the conference, the British theoretical physicist, cosmologist, and author said: “Had I attended, I would have stated my opinion that the policy of the present Israeli government is likely to lead to disaster.” WAM/MMYS
