European Commission commends Mohammed bin Zayed’s initiative to speed up international resolve to eradicate polio

WAM Abu Dhabi, Apr 26th, 2013 (WAM)–Sheikha Lubna bint Khalid Al Qasimi, Minister of Development and International Co-operation has discussed with Andris Piebalgs, member of European Commission (EC) and the delegation accompanying him, ways to boost the joint cooperation between the UAE and the EC at the international development and humanitarian levels.

The two sides tackled the efforts to ease suffering of those affected by food shortages, conflicts, lack of water and healthcare and poor education in the developing and underdeveloped countries.

Sheikha Lubna said Piebalgs congratulated the UAE for being ranked the 16th donating state, citing the generous initiative of His Highness General Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, on committing $120 million to speed up the international efforts to eradicate the polio.

She lauded the wise initiative, which she said would protect lives of millions of children against polio, noting that the UAE leadership is aware of the importance of exerting efforts to ease suffering of those affected by humanitarian crises.

The UAE minister said, “It is a strong message from the UAE to the world as the country asserts its humanitarian commitment to tackle the issues that worry the humanity. Its initiatives will continue to address different humanitarian sectors, especially the refugee issues worldwide.” The two sides exchanged views on the cooperation between the UAE and the EC, as well as on the humanitarian situations in Yemen, Syria and Somalia. They agreed to continue consultations over these issues.
