Jordan’s foreign minister: “No alternative to the two-state solution”

AMMAN, Jordan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, Ayman Safadi, affirmed today his country’s position on the two-state solution as the only way to end the conflict in Palestine and create an independent Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital.

“The continued absence of a political horizon to resume serious and effective negotiations to resolve the Palestinian issue on the basis of the two-state solution poses a threat to regional and international security,” said Safadi at a meeting with the Special Envoy of the Chinese Government on the Middle East Issue, Zhai Jun.

Safadi noted “there is no alternative to the two-state solution that establishes the independent, sovereign Palestinian state with occupied Jerusalem as its capital on the June 4, 1967 borders.”

Safadi and the Chinese envoy discussed regional and international efforts to find the necessary political horizon to maintain calm and boost the Palestinian economy, according to a Jordanian Foreign Ministry statement.

Safadi briefed Jun on the efforts made by the Kingdom to relaunch peaceful negotiations on the basis of international law and the agreed-upon peace references.

He stressed the need for Israel to respect Jerusalem’s legal and historic status quo and its sanctities, avoid imposing restrictions on worshipers, and stop all provocative measures in the holy sites, especially during the holy month of Ramadan.

Safadi also stressed the need to continue providing the necessary support to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), and to ensure the protection of the agency’s ability to provide its vital services to refugees in accordance with its UN mandate.
