Jordan’s foreign ministry deplores settlers continued storming of al-Aqsa Mosque

AMMAN, Jordan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates condemned today the continued storming of Jerusalem’s Al-Aqsa Mosque / Al-Haram Al-Sharif by Jewish extremists, the latest was allowing them to violate its sanctity and carry out provocative practices under Israeli police’s protection, reported the official Jordanian news agency, Petra.

The ministry’s official spokesperson, Haitham Abu Foul, said in a statement that the escalation of Israeli violations and the accompanying provocative practices are a flagrant and unacceptable violation of international law and the historic and legal status quo in Jerusalem and its sanctities, said Petra.

Abu Foul also noted continuous violations and attacks on Jerusalem’s holy sites represent a dangerous policy that would lead to further escalation, which would have consequences for all, added Petra.

The official spokesperson stressed that Al-Aqsa Mosque / Al-Haram Al-Sharif, with its entire 144 dunum area, is a sole place of worship for Muslims, adding that Jordan-run Jerusalem Endowment Department and Al-Aqsa Mosque Affairs is the legal entity with exclusive authority and jurisdiction to manage and regulate entry to the holy site’s yards, said the official Jordanian news agency.

He called on Israel, as the occupying power, to immediately cease all practices and violations against Al-Aqsa Mosque and respect its sanctity, stressing the need to stop all Israeli measures aimed at changing the existing historic and legal status quo and to respect the authority of Jordan-run Jerusalem Endowment Department, said Petra.

For the first time since 1967, Israeli police today allowed settlers to break into al-Aqsa mosque through the Lions’ Gate, one of the gates leading to al-Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem which is solely used by Muslims.
