Newspapers Review: Dailies highlight confrontations with soldiers as army declares closure on occupied territories

The three Palestinian Arabic dailies published today highlighted the confrontations between Palestinians and Israeli soldiers in the West Bank as well as settlers’ attacks on civilians and the army declaring a two-day closure on the occupied territories as Israelis celebrate the Purim holiday.

Al-Quds daily said in its main front-page story headline: “Confrontations, detentions, demolition of a prayer area, and attacks by settlers; a total closure on the West Bank and Gaza Strip.”

Al-Ayyam daily said in the main front-page headline: “Injuries during confrontations in Tuqu and settlers attack vehicles in Marda.”

The third daily, al-Hayat al-Jadida, said in the main headline: “Injuries in Tuqu, demolition of a prayer area and a shack south of Bethlehem, and arrest of nine people in the West Bank.”

Al-Hayat al-Jadida also highlighted the meeting of President Mahmoud Abbas in Qatar where he is attending the 5th United Nations Conference on the Least Developed Countries conference.

It also said the Palestinian freedom fighters incarcerated in Israel are on their 20th day of mutiny against repressive Israeli prison measures.

Al-Quds said a delegation of Palestinian figures from inside Israel visited Hawara yesterday and quoted one saying that “Hawara will persevere and the occupation will disappear.”

It said Israel released 50-year-old Munir Rajabi from Jerusalem after 20 years in prison for his resistance of the occupation and immediately banished him to the West Bank city of Hebron.

It quoted Hamas leader Khaled Mishaal expecting an escalation in the situation on the ground in the occupied territories as the holy Muslim fast month of Ramadan approaches.

Al-Ayyam said Ziad Nakhaleh was re-elected as secretary general of the Islamic Jihad organization.

It also reported on the mutiny among Israeli reserve pilots in protest against the judicial reforms.
