RAMALLAH, The continuous storming of Al-Aqsa Mosque, one of Islam’s holiest sites located in Jerusalem’s Old City, by Jewish fanatics under Israeli police protection was highlighted on the front page of the three Palestinian Arabic dailies published today.
“During their holidays, Al-Aqsa a ground for their assaults,” headlined al-Hayat al-Jadida daily on the storming of Al-Aqsa Mosque compound during the Jewish New Year.
“More than 1300 settlers storm Al-Aqsa, attacks against worshippers and arrest of 19,” said al-Quds daily in its main headline.
“The settlers continue to storm Al-Aqsa courtyards under occupation police protection and suppression of the worshippers,” said the headline in the third daily, al-Ayyam.
The three newspapers also highlighted the third day of clashes between Palestinians and Israeli police in several East Jerusalem neighborhoods, including Silwan, Sur Baher, al-Tur and Isawiyya, leaving dozens injured.
Al-Hayat al-Jadida printed several news stories about support for President Mahmoud Abbas and said Fatah movement and the Palestinian expatriates in Europe expressed support for the President’s speech at the United Nations last week, as well as a poll showed support among Palestinian academics for the speech.
It said former Prime Minister Rami Hamdallah represented President Abbas in the funeral of the late Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.
Al-Ayyam said President Abbas wished his Israeli counterpart in a telephone call a happy Jewish new year.
It said the toll of those who died when a migrant boat sank near the Syrian borders has reached 100, including 10 children.
Al-Quds said members of the board of trustees of Birzeit University affirmed their commitment to an agreement with the employees in order to end their month-long strike that shut down the university.
It said one million people signed a petition in support of efforts by Algeria to end the intra-Palestinian division.
The papers also had international news on their front page, mainly about the gas leak and the referendum about Russia annexing areas of Ukraine.
