RAMALLAH, Palestinian staff of the various governorates throughout the West Bank today held protest activities outside their offices in solidarity with Jerusalem’s Palestinian governor, Adnan Ghaith, detained by Israel on Monday and charged with entering the West Bank without permission.
Protests were held at the Jerusalem governorate’s office in al-Ram, north of Jerusalem, as well as in the cities of Qalqilya, Jenin, Tulkarm, Tubas, Salfit, Hebron and Bethlehem where staff from these governorates stood outside their offices holding placards denouncing the detention of and charges against Ghaith and demanding his release.
Ghaith has been detained 35 times by the Israeli authorities since he was appointed by the Palestinian Authority as governor of occupied East Jerusalem and held for days and weeks at a time on charges of carrying out Palestinian activities in the city. He was banned from entering the West Bank and from traveling abroad as well as banned from getting in touch with some Palestinian officials or engaging in political activities.
Ghaith was detained by the Israeli security forces on Monday at his home in the East Jerusalem neighborhood of Silwan.
Palestinian officials have also denounced his detention and demanded his immediate release.
