PLO, Arab League warn Australia against recognizing Jerusalem as Israel’s capital

RAMALLAH/ VIENNA, Tuesday, Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) Secretary-General Saeb Erekat and Arab League Secretary General Ahmed Aboul Gheit warned Australia on Tuesday in two separate statements against recognizing Jerusalem as capital of Israel.

“The Australian Prime Minister is now using Jerusalem as a cheap tool for domestic politics in violation of Australia’s obligations under international law and particularly Security Council Resolution 478. This shouldn’t be accepted,” said Erekat in a statement.

Aboul Gheit said from Vienna that the statement by Australia’s Prime Minister Scott Morrison in which he said his country is considering recognizing Jerusalem as capital of Israel “will negatively affect its relationship with the Arab and Islamic countries.”

He expressed hope that Morrison will not take this step, which will be in violation of international law, United Nations Security Council resolutions and its own commitment to the two-state solution.
