QSA Organizes Environmental Statistics Workshop

Doha, September 23 (QNA) – A training workshop on the concepts and frameworks of environmental statistics kicked off on Sunday to lay the foundation for official environmental statistics, with the participation of representatives of a number of key stakeholders in environmental issues including government agencies, business and research centers.
The three-day workshop, organized by Qatar Statistics Authority (QSA), will address the importance of environmental statistics in supporting development strategies to achieve the Qatar National Vision 2030, particularly with regard to environmental development, which is one of the four pillars of the vision.
It will also address the various challenges which the government agencies are facing in the provision of statistics and framing environmental requirements to ensure sustainable growth in Qatar.
QSA hopes such a workshop would come out with a mechanism that facilitates the integration of environmental information across different government bodies, improving the quality of data in order to develop a database that serves decision-making. Environmental data is expected to be published officially starting in the second quarter of 2013. 
Opening the workshop, HE the President of Qatar Statistics Authority Sheikh Hamad bin Jabor bin Jassim Al Thani underlined the importance of environmental statistics and indicators through the social, economic and environmental perspective.
HE the QSA President called for a better integration between the environmental statistics and the statistical systems in particular, especially those related to the economic and social development, which requires enhancing the capacity working in this field and better prepare to meet the challenges through policy and legislation.
HE Sheikh Hamad bin Jabor bin Jassim Al Thani noted that the tree-day workshop aims at introducing the concepts and frameworks of Environment statistics, and setting priorities on environment statistics in the State of Qatar, in addition to establishing a dialogue between users and producers of the statistics environment and the QSA.

HE the QSA President Sheikh Hamad bin Jabor bin Jassim Al Thani stressed the importance of twinning between the statistical data and sustainable development as stipulated by the fundamental principles of the official statistics adopted by the United Nations, underlining the QSA permanent keenness to apply the latest techniques and methodologies for the collection, analysis and dissemination of statistical data.
HE noted that the interest in environmental statistics in Qatar comes in line with Qatar National Vision 2030, and with the national strategy for the development of statistical work, which include an integrated program for the development of the various kinds of statistics.
He cautioned that the ecosystem around witness continuing complexities as a result of the population growth and the increasing demand for natural resources and energy sources, noting that the environmental challenges have become more acute as they are related to air quality, sea and water pollution, land degradation, waste treatment, the depletion of the ozone layer and global warming, and because of their nature they have impacts on all countries and regions without exception, and they are exceeding the limits of politics and geography.  (QNA)
