Shtayyeh calls on UN to present an initiative for peace in Middle East

RAMALLAH, Prime Minister Mohammed Shtayyeh today called on the United Nations to present an initiative for peace in the Middle East because the UN is responsible for bringing about the realization of peace and for reining in attacks carried out by the occupation’s army and settlers through the presence of UN institutions in the seam areas.

This came during Shtayyeh’s participation, during a virtual meeting, in the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People, which was organized by the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for West Asia (ESCWA) today at the United Nations headquarters in New York.

The Prime Minister called on the member states of the United Nations to support Palestine’s application to gain full membership in the UN, put pressure on Israel to allow general elections to be held in Palestine, and hold Israel accountable for crimes it committed against the Palestinian people.

The Prime Minister said: “Since the beginning of this year and under the current Israeli government, the occupation army has killed more than 200 Palestinian citizens and arrested thousands, and the new Israeli government has vowed to further escalate against the Palestinian people, the geography and the Palestinian narrative, with the main aim of destroying the possibility of establishing an independent state of Palestine with Jerusalem as its capital.”

He said that this occupation earns $50 billion annually from its use of the Palestinian lands, and to end it, it must not profit from its occupation, but rather lose as a result of it.
