UAE dispatches 158 tonnes of food aid to Syrian refugees in Jordan

WAM Abu Dhabi, 8 Jan. 2013 (WAM) — The UAE Red Crescent Authority (RCA) is intensifying its winter relief efforts to improve living conditions of Syrian refugees in Jordan who are abject humanitarian situation.

Dr. Mohammed Ateq Al Falahi, RCA Secretary General, stated today that a convoy of 16 trucks carrying 158 tonnes of food materials and winter clothing and supplies left here today by land for Jordan as part of its relief programme towards Syrian refugees in that Arab country.

” The magnitude of damage and suffering caused by the latest events in Syria requires massive relief and humanitarian operations to meet growing requirements of those affected,” he said.

”Frequent presence of RCA aid workers among refugees enabled them to closely assess their actual needs and types of assistance …. We will continue our persistent efforts to spare those refugees any risks they could face and improve their living conditions,” he added.

”We are monitoring the humanitarian situation of Syrian refugees in neighbouring countries so as to build our capacities and mobilise resources to reach the largest possible number of targeted groups,” he said.

He said a RCA team had travelled to Jordan to oversee the distribution of food assistance in refugee camps.

United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) estimated the number of Syrian refugees in Jordan at 285,000 and in Lebanon at 180,105.
