Mikati from Ain Al-Tineh: We welcome everything stated in international call for ceasefire, commit to implementing

Caretaker Prime Minister, Najib Mikati, on Monday visited House Speaker, Nabih Berri, at the Second Presidential Palace in Ain Al-Tineh. In a statement following their meeting, Mikati expressed his heartfelt condolences for the martyrdom of Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah and other victims. He also briefed Berri on his diplomatic engagements in New York during the United Nations General Assembly, highlighting the support received for Lebanon. Mikati reiterated Lebanon's commitment to the call issued by the United States, France, the European Union, the Vatican, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Germany, Australia, Canada, and Italy. He confirmed the government's dedication to implementing all points outlined in the joint statement, particularly the immediate ceasefire to initiate discussions on fully applying UN Resolution 1701. 'We welcome everything in the call and pledge to implement it immediately,' he stated, reaffirming the official Lebanese position he articulated after the call's announcement. Moreover, Mikati emphasi zed the importance of adhering to Resolution 1701 and expressed readiness to deploy the army to the area south of the Litani River to fulfill its duties in coordination with international peacekeeping forces in the region. Mikati also discussed internal issues, especially the situation of displaced persons, which Berri is keen on addressing. He shared insights on government efforts to manage the challenges posed by the large number of displaced individuals from the south, southern suburbs, Bekaa, and Baalbek. Mikati further acknowledged the difficulties of providing shelter, essential supplies, and health services and announced a meeting tomorrow morning at 9:00 AM with donor countries to seek assistance for Lebanon. 'We accept all donations and have requested them,' Mikati stated, assuring that all aid will be distributed transparently through the United Nations to ensure it reaches the needy Lebanese in this difficult time. The PM expressed confidence in the government's efforts and noted Berri's support for any essential decisions needed to overcome potential obstacles. Furthermore, Mikati and Berri discussed the urgent need for a new president, with Berri confirming that the Parliament would convene to elect a consensus president, rather than one who challenges any faction, as soon as a ceasefire is achieved. 'This is a positive step we must take quickly to stabilize constitutional institutions, complete their formation, elect a new president, and establish a new government,' Mikati concluded.
