Muscat: United Nations officials said today that efforts to contain the Ebola outbreak in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo are beginning to bear fruit, but stressed that the epidemic remains "widespread" and that bringing it fully under control will require several months.
According to Oman News Agency, Julian Harneis, the UN Special Coordinator for Ebola, stated during a press conference in Geneva that "the epidemic remains deadly and widespread, and while we are witnessing progress in some areas, other areas are still recording a rise in the number of cases."
Olivier Le Polain of the World Health Organization commented on reports suggesting the outbreak may have reached a turning point. He said, "It is too early to assert that we have passed the peak," indicating that more work is needed to fully control the epidemic.
