New york: The US dollar index steadied today after posting gains exceeding 1 percent last week. The index, which measures the performance of the American currency against six major currencies, had rallied following the Federal Reserve's interest rate hike. The central bank has signalled the likelihood of further increases.
According to Oman News Agency, the Japanese yen edged up to 156.64 against the dollar after tumbling 2 percent last week, as the Bank of Japan had raised interest rates last Friday to their highest level in 31 years at 1.25 percent.
The euro was virtually unchanged, standing at $1.1482, while sterling registered $1.339 in early trading.
The Australian dollar reached $0.7129, while the New Zealand dollar stood at $0.5721.
