UN Official Highlights Ongoing Humanitarian Crisis in Gaza and Concerns in West Bank

Gaza:The population of the Gaza Strip continues to face a complex humanitarian crisis, as highlighted by Acting United Nations Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, Ramiz Alakbarov. Despite some progress in food supply entry, significant issues persist in water, sanitation, shelter, and waste management. The region's economy remains heavily reliant on aid and cash transfers due to the stagnant labor market. According to Oman News Agency, Alakbarov mentioned in an interview with UN News that the UN is actively engaged in various sectors in Gaza, including water, sanitation, health, debris removal, education, and agricultural support. Over 300,000 children are receiving education in temporary facilities, and agricultural activities are limited due to scarce land availability. The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) continues its operations in Gaza, facing restrictions. Alakbarov noted that more than 8,000 individuals are still missing under t he rubble. Residents express a strong desire to leave temporary shelter conditions and return to normalcy, seeking access to essential services like water, sanitation, and electricity. In the West Bank, Alakbarov described the situation as "highly fragile," with ongoing challenges such as Israeli settlement activities, violence, movement restrictions, and economic strains. The UN is providing support through grants, cash assistance, and legal aid to affected families and communities. Politically, Alakbarov emphasized that there is no alternative to a two-state solution and stressed the importance of addressing the Palestinian issue comprehensively. This includes rebuilding trust, halting incitement to violence, supporting the unity of Palestinian institutions, and backing Palestinian elections, which he views as crucial to advancing the political horizon.
