Coral Reef Development Project Launched in North Al Batinah

Sohar:The Environment Authority has initiated the first phase of a coral reef development project in North Al Batinah Governorate, specifically in the Wilayat of Sohar. As part of this phase, 100 environmentally friendly marine modules have been deployed to establish new habitats, bolster biodiversity, and support the sustainability of ecosystems and fish stocks in the area.

According to Oman News Agency, Eng. Nasser Hamoud Al Yaquobi, Director of the Environment Department in North Al Batinah Governorate, stated that the modules were positioned at depths reaching 9 metres below sea level, across an area measuring approximately 20 by 15 metres. This initiative is part of efforts to facilitate coral reef growth and provide new habitats for marine organisms.

The project is designed to enhance the marine environment, boost coral growth, and aid in developing fish stocks. It also aims to offer protection and shelter for juvenile and larval marine organisms, thereby promoting their growth and preserving ecological balance in the region. Regular monitoring and assessments will be conducted to evaluate the project's outcomes and any changes during forthcoming phases.

Periodic visits by the work team are planned to observe environmental changes, track marine organisms' adaptation and settlement around the modules, and monitor coral reef growth. These efforts are intended to assess the project's environmental impact and measure its effectiveness for future phases.

The project addresses challenges facing coral reefs worldwide due to climate change, rising sea temperatures, and other environmental pressures. A global assessment by the International Union for Conservation of Nature in 2024 highlighted that 44 percent of warm-water reef-building coral species are at risk of extinction.

The deployment was a collaborative effort involving the Sohar diving team, specialists from the Directorate General of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Water Resources in North Al Batinah Governorate, and support from private sector institutions. This partnership underscores a collective commitment to protecting the marine environment and conserving natural resources.

Overall, the project aims to restore marine habitats, attract marine organisms, and support environmental monitoring and scientific research, contributing to the conservation and sustainability of marine wildlife. Coral reefs are crucial for marine biodiversity, providing shelter, feeding, and reproduction areas for various species, thereby enhancing fish stocks and maintaining ecological balance.
