Muscat:Sultan Qaboos University, through its Department of English Language and Translation at the College of Arts and Social Sciences, organized an event titled "Translation between Education and Practice: Envisioning the Future of Translation Programs in the Age of Artificial Intelligence" to mark International Translation Day 2026.
According to Oman News Agency, the event focused on the impact of artificial intelligence on the translation profession, exploring changes in translators' roles, career paths, and the practical applications of AI tools. It also examined the alignment of academic translation programs with labor market demands amidst rapid technological advancements, fostering communication among academics, translators, and students.
The event featured a lecture by Professor Dr. Lynn Booker, who holds the Canadian Research Chair in Translation. Her presentation, "The Cognitive Challenge in Translator Training Programs in the Age of Artificial Intelligence," emphasized integrating cognitive challenges into education to promote critical thinking over machine reliance.
Additionally, a panel discussion titled "The Future of Translation Programs: What Does the Labour Market Need from Translation Graduates in the Age of the Machine?" included academics and industry specialists. It addressed the influence of AI on translation markets, anticipated changes in roles and career opportunities, and the skills sought by employers.
Recommendations from the event suggested developing translator training programs that align with AI-driven transformations and the evolving needs of the translation profession.
