Ebola Death Toll in DR Congo Nears 1,000 as Outbreak Spreads to Displacement Camps

Muscat: The Ebola death toll in the Democratic Republic of the Congo has risen to 967, with confirmed cases reaching 2,423 after 79 new infections were recorded in Ituri and North Kivu provinces, according to the National Institute of Public Health. According to Oman News Agency, the United Nations has warned of the risk of the virus spreading in displacement camps in eastern DR Congo, with confirmed cases now recorded in 16 camps in Ituri province, home to more than 270,000 displaced people. The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs called for increased international support to respond to the outbreak, noting that no approved vaccine or treatment exists for the Bundibugyo strain driving the current epidemic.
