First Measles Deaths of 2026 in Pennsylvania Highlight Growing Outbreak

Muscat: Two individuals in Pennsylvania have succumbed to measles, marking the first such fatalities in the United States this year amid an escalating outbreak of the disease, the largest seen in over thirty years. According to Oman News Agency, the Pennsylvania Department of Health confirmed the deaths of two unvaccinated residents from Lancaster County due to measles. These are the first measles-related deaths in Pennsylvania in 35 years. Further details about the victims have not been disclosed due to privacy concerns. The recent deaths follow three measles-related fatalities in the US in 2025, which included two children. The resurgence of the disease has sparked criticism towards Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and the Trump administration over policies and statements perceived to have fostered vaccine hesitancy. Andrew Racine, president of the American Academy of Pediatrics, expressed concern over the deaths, noting the disease had been eliminated in the United States for decades. He urged US leaders to promote the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine to curb the spread of measles. According to the latest data from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there were 2,777 confirmed measles cases in the US as of August 20, surpassing the total of 2,289 cases reported in 2025. The current 2026 total is the highest since 1991, when 9,643 cases were recorded. Although measles was declared eliminated in the US in 2000, the CDC attributes the current outbreaks to declining vaccination coverage in recent years.
