Integrated Efforts Boost Marine Conservation in South A’Sharqiyah

Baku:South A'Sharqiyah Specialized teams from the Environment Department in South A'Sharqiyah Governorate conducted a campaign in September 2026, rescuing 201 adult turtles that had strayed from their natural habitat. The teams also returned 57,744 turtle hatchlings to the sea during this initiative.

According to Oman News Agency, the Environment Department in South A'Sharqiyah is dedicated to raising public awareness about the importance of preserving marine ecosystems. This includes educational programs that combine fieldwork with community outreach efforts. The campaign focused on protecting nesting sites, monitoring turtles and their hatchlings, and handling emergency cases.

The initiative, emphasizing community involvement, received support from the Oman India Fertiliser Company (OMIFCO). Recent activities were carried out at the Ras Al Hadd Turtle Reserve, a significant nesting site for sea turtles. Specialists and environmental activists patrolled the beach, tracked egg-laying sites, assisted hatchlings, facilitated visitor access, and addressed behaviors that might endanger the turtles or their habitats.
