The Muslim Council of Elders, under the chairmanship of His Eminence Dr. Ahmed Al Tayeb, the Grand Imam of Al Azhar, has called for unified international efforts to combat extremism and terrorism by eradicating their ideological and intellectual roots through the promotion of dialogue, tolerance, and peaceful coexistence. In a statement marking the International Day of Remembrance and Tribute to the Victims of Terrorism, observed on August 21 each year, the Council reiterates its unequivocal rejection of all forms of violence, hatred and terrorism, which contradict the teachings of all divine religions and international laws. The council also emphasised that addressing terrorism is a religious and moral responsibility requiring the concerted efforts of the global community. The Council also urges support for survivors of terrorist attacks and those affected by rising hate speech, advocating for their positive reintegration into society, addressing the psychological and physical impacts they have endured, a nd assisting them in reclaiming their normal lives. Accroding to the Emirates News Agency (WAM), the council highlighted its significant efforts through various initiatives and projects to correct misconceptions and raise awareness of the dangers posed by violent terrorist groups. These efforts include organising seven rounds of dialogue between East and West, more than 15 international peace convoys across different continents to encourage Muslims to integrate positively into their communities and launching the Emerging Peacemakers Forum to enhance the role of youth in promoting peace and human coexistence. These initiatives culminated in the signing of the Document on Human Fraternity in Abu Dhabi in 2019 by His Eminence Dr. Ahmed Al Tayeb and His Holiness Pope Francis. The landmark document, one of the most significant in modern history, asserts that religions have never been a cause for wars or a source of hatred, hostility, or extremism and calls for an end to the support of terrorist movements, consid ering such support a crime against international peace and security.
