Muscat: Integrated national efforts continue to address the effects of the oil spill resulting from the grounded vessel incident off the Al Hallaniyat Islands, through the various sectors of the National Committee for Emergency Management, encompassing response, cleanup, monitoring, follow-up, and ongoing environmental assessment.
According to Oman News Agency, the Committee's Hazardous Materials Handling Sector, represented by the Civil Defence and Ambulance Authority and the Environment Authority, in coordination with the relevant entities, is intensifying its efforts to mitigate the impacts of the oil spill in the Ras Madrakah area. The Sector is deploying specialized personnel to the affected areas and those requiring heightened readiness, based on monitoring results and technical assessments, to carry out cleanup and follow-up operations.
On Masirah Island, monitoring, follow-up, and readiness-enhancement activities continue as part of precautionary and proactive measures to address any potential developments related to the oil spill. Monitoring results to date confirm that the pollution has not reached the island's shores.
As part of efforts to strengthen field preparedness, specialized response mechanisms and equipment have been provided, in coordination and cooperation with the relevant authorities, to ensure rapid response to any potential developments.
Specialized teams continue to carry out monitoring and shoreline surveillance on the island, alongside tracking the movement of the spill and updating its projected trajectories based on available data and models, while continuing to take the necessary preventive measures to protect the marine and coastal environment of Masirah Island.
With regard to developments in the Essential Services Sector (Waste Management), Be'ah (Oman Environmental Services Holding Company) is implementing a number of measures to handle waste generated from shoreline cleanup operations.
Designated sites have been identified at Duqm engineered landfill to accommodate waste from shoreline cleanup activities, in coordination with the company's Industrial Hazardous Waste Section and the Environment Authority. A dedicated site has also been designated at Masirah Island waste transfer station to receive such waste, which will subsequently be assessed by the competent section and disposed of through appropriate means.
Coordination has been undertaken with the Environment Authority to provide personnel and equipment to contribute to shoreline cleanup operations through the operating companies contracted with Be'ah, and work is currently underway to secure the required resources.
The Essential Services Sector (Water) has enhanced its readiness to address any potential impacts related to the grounded vessel incident off the Al Hallaniyat Islands, while maintaining ongoing follow-up and coordination with the Hazardous Materials Handling Sector.
In Ras Madrakah and Duqm, necessary tests are being conducted on a daily basis, and all results have shown that samples are safe and compliant with approved specifications. Field response teams remain present at their posts at full readiness to respond to any emergency, with contingency plans in place in the event of any impact.
In the Wilayat of Masirah, the Sector continues to raise its readiness to address any potential impacts through the implementation of a number of measures, including the preparation of coastal wells for use as an alternative water source in the event that the seawater intakes of the desalination plant are affected.
These efforts are part of the integrated national response framework for addressing developments related to the grounded vessel incident, monitoring affected areas and those at risk, and taking the necessary measures to limit the effects of the pollution and protect the marine and coastal environment.
