Geneva, The National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR), represented by Dr. Houria Abbas Al Dairi, member of the Board of Commissioners and Commissioner for Child Rights, participated in the 97th session of the Committee on the Rights of the Child (CRC) of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), which was held on August 27-28 at the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR). The session discussed the national reports submitted by Bahrain and the measures taken to implement the two Optional Protocols attached to the Convention on children's rights, relating to children in armed conflict, the sale of children, child prostitution and pornography. Based on Law (26) of 2014, amended by Decree Law (20) of 2016, the NIHR submitted parallel reports of the Kingdom, according to the work mechanism of the Committee on the Rights of the Child, believing in the importance of the mechanism's promotion and protection of human rights at the national level. Dr. Al Dairi highlighted NIHR's keenness to d evelop recommendations that align with the national system in protecting children's rights by relevant international standards. She emphasised the Kingdom's efforts in implementing various preventive measures, considering the children's best interest, through the issuance of the Child Law of 2012 and the Law on Restorative Justice for Children and Their Protection from Maltreatment in 2021, including the establishment of the Family and Child Protection Office and the Child Protection Centre. She noted that these efforts come from Bahrain's obligations to implement the stipulations on the Rights of the Child of 1991 and the two Optional Protocols attached to it, joined by the Kingdom in 2004.
