Nikkei Falls 1% as Stronger Yen Weighs on Markets

Tokyo: Japan's Nikkei share average fell about 1% today, retreating from a one-week high as a sharp rise in the yen weighed on equities following coordinated intervention by Tokyo and Washington to support the Japanese currency late last week.

According to Oman News Agency, the Nikkei 225 ended down about 1% at 63,754.90, while the broader Topix index fell 1.1% to 3,960.03. Most stocks on the Nikkei closed lower, with 169 falling and 52 advancing. The coordinated intervention to bolster the yen had a noticeable impact on market dynamics, leading to the decline observed in the indices.
