Geneva: The Sultanate of Oman has emphasized the necessity for international human rights efforts to be anchored in humanitarian principles, devoid of politicization or selectivity, and grounded in respect for human dignity, justice, and accountability. It highlighted the importance of a unified global approach to place human rights at the core of collective initiatives, as a vital pillar for peace, security, and stability for all.
According to Oman News Agency, Ambassador Idris Abdulrahman Al Khanjari, Oman's Permanent Representative to the United Nations and other international organizations in Geneva, addressed the 59th session of the UN Human Rights Council. He expressed concerns over diminishing commitments from some donor entities toward human rights issues, which he noted hampers the ability of international organizations to effectively address multiple humanitarian crises.
Ambassador Al Khanjari underscored the need to reassess international funding priorities, directing resources towards initiatives with a direct impact and enhancing transparency and efficiency in managing humanitarian aid. He pointed out that the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip is one of the worst crises in modern history, due to ongoing Israeli aggression and severe violations of international humanitarian law.
He detailed how this aggression has led to the deaths of thousands of civilians, including many women and children, and caused extensive damage to infrastructure, healthcare facilities, and schools. The situation has also resulted in famine and epidemics, exacerbated by a blockade and harsh living conditions.
Oman's Permanent Representative called for urgent international action, anchored in international law and justice principles, to halt violations, hold perpetrators accountable, ensure civilian protection, and deliver immediate humanitarian aid without double standards.
In a related context, Oman expressed concern over the military escalation in the region, particularly Israel's attacks on the Islamic Republic of Iran, which violate international law and the UN Charter, undermining state sovereignty and regional stability.
Oman advocates for a return to diplomatic channels, embracing dialogue and understanding as sustainable solutions for dispute resolution and strengthening collective security.
