Riyadh: The Sultanate of Oman, represented by the Environment Authority, is actively participating in the 16th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP16) under the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD). This significant event, held in Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, from December 2 to 13, is themed 'Our Land. Our Future'. Oman's delegation is led by Dr. Abdullah Ali Al Amri, Chairman of the Environment Authority. According to Oman News Agency, Dr. Al Amri emphasized Oman's proactive approach in addressing desertification, highlighting its detrimental effects on natural pastures and arable land. He detailed Oman's environmental strategies, which align with Oman Vision 2040, and noted the country's commitment to various environmental agreements and treaties. The conference sees the participation of 197 parties, consisting of 196 countries and the European Union, amidst growing concerns over the rising rates of desertification, land degradation, and drought worldwide. The agenda i ncludes launching initiatives, discussing funding mechanisms, and reviewing specific projects by countries aimed at combating these environmental challenges. Additionally, attendees will evaluate the implementation plan of COP16 to address desertification and land degradation effectively.
