Muscat:Oman participated in the 46th meeting of the GCC Undersecretaries Responsible for Environmental Affairs, focusing on enhancing joint Gulf environmental actions and coordinating regional and international environmental positions.
According to Oman News Agency, the meeting reviewed the implementation of GCC environmental directives and the requirements of the current environmental situation. Discussions included the action plan of the Committee of Ministers Responsible for Environmental Affairs through 2030, the Middle East Green Initiative, and efforts to develop the Gulf Environmental Performance Index.
The meeting also addressed the protection of biological diversity and wildlife. Topics included updating the Convention on the Conservation of Wildlife and Their Natural Habitats in GCC states, the executive framework for falcon ownership transfer, and the periodic convening of the Gulf Wildlife Conference. Additionally, the slogan "Our Natural Reserves: A Pillar of Diversity and Sustainability" was adopted for the 2026 Gulf Wildlife Day.
Oman proposed establishing a Gulf Centre for Environmental and Climate Change Studies, to be based in Muscat. The proposal detailed a comprehensive study covering the estimated costs, organizational structure, mandates, and job titles. It included forming a scientific advisory committee chaired by Oman, with two members from each state, representing government environmental agencies and academia.
The meeting also discussed international cooperation, focusing on activating joint partnerships and coordinating Gulf positions in international environmental negotiations. This includes developing a legally binding international instrument to combat plastic pollution and enhancing Gulf coordination in relevant meetings.
Preparations for the eighth session of the United Nations Environment Assembly were also addressed, emphasizing the importance of unified GCC positions. The enhancement of proactive monitoring of international environmental issues, studying relevant proposals, and submitting outcomes to the Committee of Ministers were also discussed.
