Muscat: The 5th edition of the Omani Geological Heritage Exhibition, titled "Sustainability and Job Opportunities," commenced today in the Wilayat of Al Jabal Al Akhdar, A'Dakhiliyah Governorate, running until the end of coming December. The opening of the exhibition was held under the auspices of Sheikh Mahmoud Rashid Al Saadi, Acting Governor of A'Dakhiliyah.
According to Oman News Agency, this edition introduces new features, including the "Al Hajar Geopark" project, which is the first national geopark project in Oman. This initiative aims to conserve geological heritage sites and utilize them in tourism, education, and scientific research. The exhibition offers both scientific and interactive content, highlighting the story of geological heritage, Oman's geological diversity, its history, and the formation of its land over geological eras. It emphasizes the importance of conserving geological heritage and explores job opportunities in geotourism.
The exhibition also features sections on the "Al Hajar Geopark" project, explaining the concept, objectives, and its significance for tourism, scientific, and developmental purposes. Among the showcased items are geological heritage pieces, such as a fossil estimated to be around 800 million years old, 3D models of an extinct primitive elephant from Dhofar Governorate, and a dinosaur whose fossilized remains were found in Al Khoudh area in the Wilayat of A'Seeb. These exhibits highlight the geological history of Oman.
