SCH Chairman attends press conference for Bahrain Diabetes and Obesity Conference

Manama, Lieutenant General Dr. Shaikh Mohammed bin Abdullah Al Khalifa, Chairman of the Supreme Council of Health (SCH), attended the press conference announcing the Bahrain Diabetes and Obesity Conference. The conference will be held on November 20-21, under the theme "Diabetes and Quality of Life". The event will feature international experts from the GCC, Middle East, and North Africa. The conference, under the patronage of Her Royal Highness Princess Sabeeka bint Ibrahim Al Khalifa, Consort of His Majesty the King and President of the Supreme Council for Women (SCW), will include sessions on diabetes and women's health, and workshops for school supervisors and community members, as part of Bahrain's November diabetes awareness programmes. Speaking at the press conference, Dr. Lolwa Showaiter, the Health Minister Undersecretary, said the conference will highlight health services offered by the ministry in this area, as part of the comprehensive health care system. Government Hospitals CEO Dr. Maryam A l Jalahma said that statistics from 2023 indicate that women and children account for 24% of diabetic hospital admissions, with women representing 48% of outpatient treatments. Additionally, 14% of women receiving prenatal care were diagnosed with diabetes. Efforts are being made to provide 160 insulin pumps in public hospitals for children and adults, as well as through other civil institutions, she added. Dr. Dalal Al Rumaihi, Endocrinologist at Awali Hospital, explained that the conference will address various topics related to diabetes, including women's health, obesity and heart health, child health and mental health. The event will also feature an exhibition with strategic partners, sponsors, and civil society institutions. She noted that the conference aims to update healthcare professionals on the latest developments in diabetes and obesity care, focus on women's health, involve decision-makers in discussions, and promote scientific research in Bahrain. Colonel Dr. Feryal Ali, Endocrinology Consul tant at the Royal Medical Services, underscored the commitment to treating and managing diabetes, particularly during and after pregnancy, and providing care for type 1 and type 2 diabetes and related complications.
