Muscat: The Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology, in cooperation with the National Survey and Geospatial Information Authority (NSGIA) and Google, launched the second phase of the ‘Street View’ feature project. This enables users inside and outside the Sultanate of Oman to explore natural landscapes, historical landmarks, and modern infrastructure through 360-degree panoramic images via the Street View feature on Google Maps.
According to Oman News Agency, the second phase was launched through an official update on the application, a step that contributes to enhancing the digital presence of the Sultanate of Oman and facilitating access to its locations. The project is expected to have an impact on multiple sectors, foremost among them tourism and the development of services and businesses.
The new coverage included various governorates of the Sultanate of Oman, encompassing routes and landmarks not covered in the first phase, as part of an orientation to expand the scope of imaging during 2025. The targeted coverage distance for this phase reached 27,000 kilometers, with images captured using special ‘Trekker’ devices developed by Google.
The launch of this phase reflects the Sultanate of Oman’s commitment to supporting innovation, enhancing digital access, and solidifying its position as a tourist destination rich in cultural and natural diversity. Users can view the images via the Google Maps application by activating the ‘Street View’ option within the display settings.
It is worth noting that the first phase included a selected group of sites, among them Khor Rori, which is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The coverage distance at that time was approximately 36,000 kilometers. Thus, the total coverage distance for the first and second phases combined reaches about 63,000 kilometers to date. The project is set to continue with a third phase during 2026 to update and review a number of routes previously covered, in order to present an updated image that reflects Oman’s beauty and the diversity of its terrain.
