Trump Plans 200% Tariffs on Imported Generic Drugs to Boost US Manufacturing

Muscat: US President Donald Trump has announced plans to impose tariffs on imported generic drugs starting in mid-2028, aiming to push pharmaceutical companies to manufacture them on US soil. According to Oman News Agency, in a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump said generic drugs would remain exempt until August 2028. A 100 percent tariff would then apply for one year, rising to 200 percent thereafter. The two-year grace period is designed to give drugmakers time to relocate production to the United States, he said. Trump added that companies choosing not to build manufacturing facilities in the US would face penalties, though he did not specify the nature of those penalties or the legal authority for the proposed tariffs. The move escalates pressure on pharmaceutical companies that produce their drugs outside the United States.
