US Embassy in Lebanon: we are closely monitoring the security situation in Lebanon

The US Embassy issued the following statement: "The U.S. Embassy is closely monitoring the security situation in Lebanon, particularly in the wake of the intensified cross-border fire that took place early in the day on August 25. While some airlines have suspended or canceled flights and others continue to make short-notice schedule changes, commercial transportation options to leave Lebanon remain available. Please see available flight options at Beirut-Rafic Hariri International Airport . U.S. citizens who need financial assistance returning to the United States may apply for a repatriation loan by contacting the embassy. We recommend that U.S. citizens who choose not to depart Lebanon prepare contingency plans for emergency situations and be prepared to shelter in place for an extended period of time. As advised in the Lebanon Travel Advisory , U.S. citizens should avoid travel to the Lebanon-Israel border area, the Lebanon-Syria border area, and refugee settlements. In all parts of Lebanon, you should avoid demonstrations and exercise caution if in the vicinity of any large gatherings or protests. Due to high tensions in the region, the security environment remains complex and can change quicky. We remind U.S. citizens of the continued need for caution and encourage them to monitor the news for breaking developments. We recommend that U.S. citizens in Lebanon monitor Travel.State.Gov for alerts and the news closely for breaking developments that could affect internal security. We also recommend that U.S. citizens enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive alerts and make it easier for us to locate you in an emergency. Actions To Take: If you are in Lebanon, be prepared to shelter in place for an extended period of time should the situation deteriorate. Ensure you and your family have valid travel documents (unexpired passport and, if applicable, visa required to enter a third country) and are prepared to travel. Make plans to depart that do not rely on the U.S. government. Keep your cell phone charged in case of emergency. Exercise caution, monitor the news closely for breaking developments that could affect internal security, and factor updated information into your travel plans and activities.
