New york: The Sultanate of Oman participated in the Joint Ministerial Meeting between the GCC countries and the United Kingdom, held alongside the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly.
According to Oman News Agency, Sayyid Badr bin Hamad Al Busaidi, Oman’s Foreign Minister, highlighted the strong historical ties between Oman, the GCC countries, and the UK. He emphasized the expanding cooperation in various sectors such as defense, security, trade, renewable energy, logistics, and communication, which benefits the stability of both regions and fosters collaboration in educational, technical, and cultural fields.
Sayyid Badr expressed optimism about the ongoing Free Trade Agreement negotiations with the UK. He believes that the agreement will strengthen the economic partnership, enhancing the flow of investments and trade valued at billions of dollars annually.
On the political front, the Foreign Minister referenced a meeting held last July between His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, underscoring the depth of consultations and mutual understanding between their nations.
Oman and the GCC countries also applauded the UK’s recognition of the State of Palestine, considering it a significant step towards justice and a two-state solution. Sayyid Badr urged for bold actions against Israeli violations and the extremist policies of the government led by Benjamin Netanyahu, advocating for practical measures such as halting military cooperation and pressuring Israel into a genuine political process to ensure Palestinian rights.
He emphasized that lasting security and peace can only be achieved through justice and empowering Palestinians with self-determination and statehood. He cautioned against external attempts to impose a Palestinian leadership, warning that such actions could worsen the crisis.
Sayyid Badr concluded by reaffirming Oman’s relationship with the UK, which is built on openness, pragmatism, and respect. Oman is committed to working with the UK and GCC countries to promote security, stability, and peace regionally and globally.
