Muscat:The space sector in Oman evolved significantly from 2023 to 2025, transitioning from establishment to market-building. This progress was fueled by increased private investment, a rise in the number of companies and employees, strategic satellite projects, infrastructure development, and enhanced international collaboration.
According to Oman News Agency, Eng. Said Hamoud Al Maawali, Minister of Transport, Communications and Information Technology, stated that the sector's rapid development is crucial for the digital economy, supporting economic diversification and capacity building under Oman Vision 2040. Tangible progress in infrastructure, international partnerships, and investment in space applications and services was evident by 2025.
The report "Harvest of the National Space Program 2023-2025" from the National Center for Space, Advanced Technologies and Artificial Intelligence at the Ministry highlighted the sector's development since the National Space Policy launch in 2020. The report noted that 65 percent of space projects are in implementation, with national capacity-building programs and projects related to space sovereignty and satellites underway. The number of companies rose from 11 in 2023 to 26 in 2025, and private sector investment increased from RO 20 million to RO 74 million during the same period.
The National Space Program, aligned with Oman Vision 2040, focuses on digital transformation and diversifying income sources. It includes 14 projects that foster private sector participation. Significant initiatives include the OmanSat-1 satellite project and the Duqm rocket launch project, both aimed at advancing national capabilities and economic diversification.
Capacity building remained a priority, with the implementation of training programs and the Oman Space Accelerator Program, which supported startups in various space-related fields. The Ministry's collaboration with Sultan Qaboos University led to the development of a Space Engineering Laboratory to support research and innovation.
Oman also made strides in international relations, joining the Artemis Accords and the International Astronautical Federation to enhance global cooperation. The sector's growth is supported by legislative developments, including the drafting of the Omani Space Law and regulations for launch activities.
The Coordinating Committee for Space Science and Applications Centers was established to enhance national coordination and maximize resources. These efforts reflect Oman's progress towards the empowerment and operations phase, strengthening its position in the global space economy and supporting Oman Vision 2040 objectives.
