Social Protection Fund and ILO Initiate Dialogue on Non-Omani Workers’ Insurance Programs

Accra:The Social Protection Fund, in collaboration with the International Labour Organization (ILO), has initiated the first session of a dialogue series focused on social insurance programs for non-Omani workers. This session included representatives from diplomatic missions, the Ministry of Labour, and the Foreign Ministry.

According to Oman News Agency, the initiative is designed to enhance understanding and improve coordination among institutions that support non-Omani workers in Oman. The goal is to facilitate the exchange of information and expertise, enriching dialogue around social insurance programs. These efforts aim to align legal procedures with the actual experiences of non-Omani workers, identifying practical steps to enhance their use of the social protection system.

Non-Omani workers represent a significant portion of Oman's workforce. As enhancements to the social protection system continue, it becomes essential to provide clear guidelines and strengthen coordination to ensure workers can access available protections effectively.

The session featured an introductory presentation on the social protection system, followed by a discussion highlighting diplomatic missions' experiences in this area. This dialogue offered an opportunity for open exchange on common inquiries and challenges faced by these missions in assisting non-Omani workers.

Diplomatic missions play a crucial role in liaising with workers and relevant institutions, helping to monitor and address difficulties workers encounter, such as understanding eligibility, obtaining documents, and processing claims. Sharing these experiences collectively aids in identifying and addressing recurring challenges, ultimately benefiting a broader range of non-Omani workers.

The dialogues aim to support continuous improvement of the social protection system by distinguishing between challenges that can be resolved with better information and those requiring procedural or policy changes.

The ILO supports this initiative through its "STREAM" program, which seeks to expand social protection for non-Omani workers and their families. The program will provide advice, technical support, and help document challenges and follow-up actions.

Future sessions will include technical presentations and discussions, supported by reference documents and technical briefings, aiming to establish a sustainable platform for dialogue and coordination led by the Social Protection Fund.
