As life of cancer-stricken freedom fighter Abu Hmeid is at risk, group blames medical negligence in prisons

RAMALLAH, As cancer-stricken freedom fighter Nasser Abu Hmeid, who is serving five life terms, is fighting for his life, the Palestinian Prisoner Society (PPS) said today that 73 freedom fighters have died from medical negligence who were among 231 Palestinians who have died while incarcerated in Israel since the occupation started in 1967.

“The crime of medical negligence (slow killing) and torture were the most prominent policies that led to the death of prisoners,” the PPS said in a statement.

It said some 600 Palestinians serving time in the Israeli occupation prisons have been diagnosed over the past years with serious illnesses, including about 200 suffering from chronic diseases, including 23 prisoners with tumors and cancer of various degrees, the most serious is Nasser Abu Hmeid, who is at risk of death at any moment.

The PPS accused the Israel Prison Services (IPS) of intentionally stalling in transferring ill prisoners, mainly those diagnosed with cancer, to hospitals in a way to speed up their death, adding that many cancer patients were not informed of their situation until cancer had reached an advanced and deadly stage.
