Food security, free trade among 24 items the Economic and Social Council will present to the Arab Summit

At the conclusion of its meeting at the ministerial level in Algiers, the Arab Economic and Social Council approved 24 items that will be submitted to the Arab Summit scheduled to be held on November 1 and 2, foremost of which are Arab food security and activating the free trade area.

Algerian Trade Minister Kamal Rezik said during a press conference after the meeting that these items were unanimously approved and they included several recommendations on economic and social topics such as Arab food security, activating the free trade zone, and accelerating the establishment of the Arab customs union.

Assistant Secretary-General, Head of the Social Affairs Sector in the Council, Haifa Abu-Ghazaleh, explained that the items that will be submitted to the Summit affect the life of the Arab person, especially in the aftermath of the Corona pandemic, and the repercussions of the geostrategic crises.

She said that the council was tasked with laying out a mechanism that obliges member states to implement its decisions related to the greater Arab free trade area.

The meeting also agreed on a decision urging the Arab countries to speed up the completion of the procedures for ratification of the agreement regulating transport and transit commission between Arab countries in order to put it into effect.

The meeting also approved several items of a social nature and others related to addressing the health and humanitarian challenges facing some Arab countries.
