Israeli forces detain 12 Palestinians, injure two others in West Bank raids

RAMALLAH, Israeli forces Wednesday overnight detained 12 Palestinians and injured two others across the occupied West Bank, according to local and security sources.

They said that Israeli forces rounded up three Palestinians, including two brothers, and ransacked the houses of their families in Jalazone refugee camp, north of the city of Ramallah.

The gun-toting soldiers also rounded up another from Deir Abu Mashaal village, northwest of the city.

This came as a convoy of army vehicles stormed the nearby town of Beit Rima, where the soldiers broke into a family house and threatened to gun down a family member if does not turn himself to the army.

In the southern West Bank, the sources confirmed a raid in Beit Fajjar town, south of the city of Bethlehem, leading to re-arresting a former prisoner.

In the northern West Bank, a sizable army force raided several neighborhoods of Nablus city, including Ras al-Ein and Jabal Ash-Shamali, muscled inside two houses and conducted thorough searches before eventually detaining two others, including a former prisoner.

Another was detained from Deir al-Hatab village, east of the city.

Also in the northern West Bank, the soldiers conducted a similar raid in Shuweika neighborhood, north of the city of Tulkarm, leading to the detention of another as a means to force his brother to turn himself to the army.

The heavily-armed soldiers barged their way into Qabatiya town, south of the city of Jenin, surrounded a house before detaining three others, including two former prisoners.

During the ensuing violent confrontations, the soldiers opened gunfire towards local youths attempting to block their entry, hitting one by more than a bullet in the shoulder and foot.

Once the casualty fell down, an army vehicle intentionally ran him over. The casualty was rushed to a hospital for urgent treatment.

The troops also stormed the nearby town of Zababdeh, where they rammed one of their military vehicles into a young man, inflicting bruises across his body.

On Tuesday night, police rounded up another from the East Jerusalem neighborhood of Ras al-Amoud.

Israeli forces frequently raid Palestinian houses almost on a daily basis across the West Bank on the pretext of searching for “wanted” Palestinians, triggering clashes with residents.

These raids, which take place also in areas under the full control of the Palestinian Authority, are conducted with no need for a search warrant, whenever and wherever the military chooses in keeping with its sweeping arbitrary powers.

Under Israeli military law army commanders have full executive, legislative and judicial authority over 3 million Palestinians living in the West Bank. Palestinians have no say in how this authority is exercised.

According to the latest figures from Addameer, the Palestinian Prisoner Support and Human Rights Association, there are currently 4,700 Palestinian political prisoners in Israeli prisons and detention centers, including 150 children and 34 female prisoners.

This number includes approximately 835 Palestinians placed under “administrative detention”, that allows the detention of Palestinians without charge or trial for renewable intervals ranging between three and six months based on undisclosed evidence that even a detainee’s lawyer is barred from viewing.

Mass arrest of Palestinians is nothing new. According to a 2017 report by Addameer, over the past 50 years, more than 800,000 Palestinians have been imprisoned or detained by Israel, this figure is now believed to be closer to 1 million. This means that about 40% of Palestinian men and boys living under military occupation have been deprived of their freedom. Almost every Palestinian family has suffered the imprisonment of a loved one.
