Mount semeru: Mount Semeru in Indonesia's Java region erupted today, unleashing scorching pyroclastic flows stretching up to three kilometres, according to the volcano's monitoring post.
According to Oman News Agency, Sigit Rian Alfian, an official at the Mount Semeru monitoring post, said the eruption occurred in the morning, with an ash column rising approximately 1,500 metres above the summit - or 5,176 metres above sea level. A dense plume of grey ash drifted westward. The eruption was recorded on seismic equipment with a maximum amplitude of 20 millimetres and lasted three minutes and 23 seconds.
The eruption was accompanied by pyroclastic flows extending three kilometres toward the southeast, in the direction of the Besuk Kobokan, Alfian added.
Residents have been advised to stay at least 500 metres from the banks of the Besuk Kobokan River due to the risk of pyroclastic flows and lahars, which could reach up to 17 kilometres.
Indonesia, an archipelago nation, lies on the Pacific Ring of Fire, a region of high volcanic and seismic activity.
