National Museum Hosts Symposium on Documenting Astronomical Heritage

Muscat: The National Museum hosted today the "National Symposium on Documenting Omani Astronomical Heritage" in collaboration with the Oman Society of Astronomy and Space. The event was held under the auspices of Salem Mohammed Al Mahrouqi, Minister of Heritage and Tourism, and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the National Museum. A number of researchers and enthusiasts in the field of astronomical heritage attended the event.

According to Oman News Agency, the symposium aimed to preserve and document Omani astronomical heritage, aligning with Oman Vision 2040's emphasis on identity, heritage, and culture as key elements in building the future. The Chairman of Oman Society of Astronomy and Space announced the launch of a national initiative focused on gathering traditional knowledge about astronomy and highlighting Omanis' contributions in this field.

The symposium underscored the importance of preserving astronomical heritage within Oman Vision 2040's framework, which prioritizes "preserving, documenting, and disseminating heritage globally." This initiative aims to enhance Oman's regional and international standing by addressing the challenge of heritage obscurity.

Three sessions were conducted during the symposium, covering various astronomical topics. In the first session, papers were presented on agricultural heritage, including "Distribution of Aflaj Using Stars" and "Omani Navigators' Use of Zodiac Signs, Mansions, and Stars."

The second session focused on maritime astronomical heritage, with papers discussing the division of water in traditional Omani irrigation systems and the significance of stars in determining fishing and sailing times. Other topics included the relationship between astronomy and agriculture, as well as the connection between astronomy and weather in Oman.

The third session explored astronomical calculations and manuscripts, featuring discussions on "Astronomical Awareness Among Omanis" and "The Sidereal Year and the Calculation of the Cycle." The session concluded with a paper on "Astronomy and Military Tactics among the Omanis."

The symposium concluded with recommendations to emphasize the national initiative, publish related research, and include Omani astronomical heritage in school curricula to enhance awareness among future generations, thereby strengthening Oman's position in the international astronomical arena.
