Newspaper Review: Israeli violations in East Jerusalem focus of dailies

RAMALLAH, News about the ongoing Israeli violations against the Palestinian worshippers in East Jerusalem’s Aqsa Mosque hit the front pages of the three Arabic Palestinian dailies on Tuesday.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida, al-Ayyam and al-Quds said Israeli police last night cracked down on Palestinian worshippers in the area of Damascus Gate in occupied East Jerusalem, adding that they assaulted a number of citizens and detained at least four of them.

Nabil Abu Rudeineh, the official spokesman for the Palestinian presidency, said that the Palestinian leadership holds Israel fully responsible for this escalation, and warns against infringing on Islamic and Christian holy places, stressing that “Jerusalem is not for sale or bargaining,” as reported in Al-Hayat al-Jadida and al-Ayyam.

He said in a statement that the storming yesterday of Damascus Gate area in occupied East Jerusalem by Israeli Foreign Minister Yair Lapid was irresponsible behavior, as well as army, police and settlers’ provocations, all of which could lead to an explosion not only in Palestine but in the region as a whole.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida reported that marking Palestinian Child Day, which coincides on the 5th of April every year, the Palestinian Prisoner Society (PPS) said in a report that Israel detained more than 9000 children since 2015 until today, and 19,000 since the outbreak of the second Intifada (uprising) in September 2000 that included children less than 10 years of age.

Al-Quds said that the Israeli settlers yesterday broke into al-Aqsa mosque under heavy protection from the Israeli forces and police.
