Newspapers Review: Israel’s deportation of human rights defender, World Cup, confrontations highlight of dailies

Israel’s deportation of Palestinian-French human rights defender Salah Hammouri after revoking his Jerusalem residency rights, the results of the World Cup final match, and the confrontations between Palestinian and Israeli soldiers in the occupied territories were highlighted on the front page of the three Palestinian Arabic dailies published today.

Al-Quds daily said Hammouri was deported to France, where his wife and children were after Israel denied them entry into Palestine to be with Salah, amidst wide-scale condemnation.

It said Hammouri, who was held in administrative detention for the last nine months in preparation for deporting him because of his anti-occupation political activities, said after arriving in Paris that the location has been changed but the struggle will continue.

Al-Ayyam daily said Argentina won the World Cup 2022 for the third time in its history after defeating the previous cup holder France in penalty shots.

The matches were held in Qatar and the final match was held as the Gulf country marked its National Day, with the third daily, al-Hayat al-Jadida, saying on its front page that President Mahmoud Abbas congratulated the Emir of Qatar on the National Day and his country’s success in hosting the World Cup 2022.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida also said that President Abbas called the prime minister of Malaysia and discussed with him strengthening bilateral relations.

It also said several Palestinians were injured in confrontations with Israeli soldiers and others were detained in the occupied territories as Israeli settlers stormed Al-Aqsa Mosque.

The three dailies reported on the funeral of the two Mtair brothers killed when an Israeli settler rammed into them on the Nablus-Ramallah road, with al-Ayyam saying the United States called for an investigation into the death of the Mtair brothers.

Al-Quds said the US ambassador to Israel said in an interview that his government is going to reopen the US consulate in East Jerusalem.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida said Gazans buried yesterday eight youths who drowned while trying to get to Europe from Tunisia.

The three papers also reported on the deteriorating health of cancer-stricken Palestinian freedom fighter incarcerated in Israel, Nasser Abu Hmeid, who is facing imminent death due to deterioration of his health.
