RAMALLAH, Remarks made by President Mahmoud Abbas during his current visit to Germany and Israel admitting responsibility for the massacre of five children in Jabaliya in the Gaza Strip during its latest aggression were highlighted on the front page of the three Palestinian Arabic dailies published today.
Al-Hayat al-Jadida daily quoted the President warning against losing the chance of achieving the two-state solution, while Al-Ayyam daily quoted him saying Israel’s policies undermine the two-state solution and turn it into a one-state system under an apartheid regime.
The third daily, al-Quds, quoted him saying that Israel should stop its crimes and unilateral measures in the occupied territories. It also quoted German Chancellor Olaf Scholz saying German rejects the settlements and believes in a political solution to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.
On Israel admitting responsibility for the killing of five children in Jabaliya, al-Ayyam said the five were killed in an Israeli airstrike and not as claimed by Israel in the beginning that they were killed when a missile fired by the Palestinians in Gaza toward Israel fell short of its target and hit Jabaliya.
It also quoted Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh saying that the Jabaliya massacre adds to Israel’s criminal record at international courts.
Al-Quds quoted the European Union Representative Sven Kühn von Burgsdorff saying during a visit to the besieged Gaza Strip that the Israeli blockade on Gaza should be lifted and called for “a transparent and independent investigation into the unlawful killing of civilians, including many children and women.”
It said that people were injured during Israeli army incursions into West Bank cities and towns and that demolitions were also reported in several areas.
It said in a report from its Washington correspondent that more than 50 human rights organizations have called for ending US and Israeli pressure on a UN human rights committee investigating Israel’s apartheid against the Palestinians.
Al-Hayat al-Jadida said a Palestinian resident of East Jerusalem was forced to demolish his own home to avoid paying high costs and fines for the Israeli municipality if it carries out the demolition.
It said the Palestinian freedom fighters in Israeli jails are planning protest steps in September after the Israeli Prison Services has reneged on a previous agreement with the prisoners.
Al-Ayyam said Human Rights Watch called on Israel to release human rights defender and French-Palestinian lawyer Salah Hammouri.
