Oman and Japan Call for Political Solution to Ease Regional Tensions

Muscat: The Sultanate of Oman and Japan have jointly underscored the critical need for a political resolution to de-escalate tensions in the region. The two nations also emphasized the importance of intensifying international efforts to safeguard the freedom of maritime navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, in line with international law, to ensure the smooth flow of maritime traffic and energy supplies. According to Oman News Agency, this declaration came during a joint press conference held today by Sayyid Badr bin Hamad Al Busaidi, Oman's Foreign Minister, and Motegi Toshimitsu, Japan's Minister for Foreign Affairs. Sayyid Badr highlighted the mutual respect, trust, and shared commitment to peace and stability that underpin Omani-Japanese relations. He noted that the forthcoming 55th anniversary of diplomatic ties between the two countries presents an opportunity to chart a more ambitious future for the partnership. Sayyid Badr emphasized the economic ties as a crucial aspect of their relationship, welcomi ng the growing interest of Japanese companies in Oman, especially in sectors such as energy, renewables, low-carbon technologies, logistics, and infrastructure. He expressed optimism for enhanced cooperation in fields like space, green manufacturing, and advanced technology. The Foreign Minister also mentioned the ongoing discussions regarding a free trade agreement between Japan and GCC countries, highlighting the potential benefits of such an agreement for bilateral trade, investment, and supply chain security. He noted the significant increase in tourism and cultural exchange, driven by embassy-led events and participation in the upcoming 2025 Expo in Osaka. Discussing regional developments, Sayyid Badr reiterated the vital role of safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz for regional security and prosperity. He stressed the importance of maritime security, adherence to international law, and the prevention of further escalation. He affirmed Oman's commitment to ensuring lasting peace through diplomacy and engagement to address instability causes. Sayyid Badr reaffirmed Oman's determination to work with Japan and international partners to support dialogue and peaceful solutions. He expressed gratitude to his Japanese counterpart for the constructive discussions, anticipating closer cooperation between the two countries. Motegi Toshimitsu, Japan's Minister for Foreign Affairs, expressed appreciation for Oman's support of international peace and security. He stated Japan's plans to develop a comprehensive cooperation strategy to enhance economic and energy resilience amid Middle Eastern tensions. He highlighted Oman's initiatives in water desalination and eco-friendly steel production, indicating Japan's intent to contribute actively. Motegi noted the critical stage of the situation surrounding Iran and the necessity for discussions to de-escalate tensions, confirming Japan's coordination with Oman to ensure safe navigation through the Strait of Hormuz and the Bab-el-Mandeb Strait. He emphasized the streng thened cooperation between Japan and Oman across various sectors beyond energy. The Japanese Foreign Minister expressed gratitude for Oman's stable supply of crude oil and LNG, affirming intentions to promote clean energy cooperation, focusing on hydrogen and ammonia development.
