Palestinians brace themselves for a six-hour power cut due to a threat by the Israeli electricity company

RAMALLAH, Palestinians living in four areas served by the Palestinian-owned Jerusalem District Electricity Company (JEDCO) are bracing themselves for a six-hour cut in power six times a month following threats by the Israel Electricity Company (IEC) to cut power supply to the Palestinian company.

JEDCO director-general Hisham Omari told Palestine radio today that his company received yesterday a second warning notice from the IEC which says that it will start cutting down on supply to JEDCO in light of the accumulation of debt.

This means, said Omari, that Palestinians living in JEDCO’s four concession areas, which include the Jerusalem, Ramallah, Bethlehem and Jericho districts, will face power cut for six hours a day starting at 9:00 am and repeated six times a month in each district.

He said that the Israeli company is trying to pressure JEDCO to pay its debt by harming the interests of the Palestinians it serves, warning that the power cut will harm the health, education and economic sectors.

Omari said his company is in contact with various parties to prevent the power cut.
