Palestinians demonstrate outside Damon Prison in support of women prisoners

A group of Palestinian activists held a protest today outside the Israeli prison of Damon, near Haifa, in support of nearly 30 Palestinian women incarcerated in the prison.

The activists chanted slogans and waved banners calling for the immediate release of the female Palestinian political prisoners incarcerated there, including 10 mothers.

The protest aims to highlight the issue of the Palestinian female prisoners in Israeli detention who are deprived of their right to unite with their families as a result of imprisonment by the Israeli occupation authorities.

There are more than 4,500 Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails, of whom nearly 500 are held without charge or trial under Israel’s controversial administrative detention policy.

The protest came a day after the Palestinian Prisoners Society (PPS) held the Israeli occupation authorities fully responsible for the deteriorating health condition of female Palestinian prisoner Azhar Assaf, who is now being denied badly-needed hospitalization in spite of her medical condition.

Assaf, a resident of the village of Al-Jib, northwest of Jerusalem, has been detained by the Israeli occupation authorities since the September 11, and suffers from many health problems, including neurological, hearing and vision problems.
